A Song about Birds

Cluck, you clever and industrious chick
Stretch your neck out
Quickly look from side to side
And scratch the living dirt
Rich with fat worms and tasty seeds
Cluck it up with the flock
And when the cock crows
Answer him
Quick: Cluck! Cluck!

Twit, you dusky sparrow
Rustle your wings
And fan your tail feathers
In the soothing sun-drenched dirt
A cleansing bath
Share it with your twittering flittery flock
In little clouds of dusty happiness
Twit! Twit! Twit-twit!

Quack, you quick duck
It is your dumb luck
To be all wet
While keeping dry your underwear
You never have to worry
About getting your web-feet wet
Your mirrored wings shine in the sun
When you race across the water in a glittering spray
Quack, quack, quack!
You rise so high
A living arrow aiming for the sky.

Caw, you shiny coal-bird crow
Cautious clever curious
Furious when you find the owl
On its silent dusky prowl
Your own darkness manifest
In those grasping talons and the knife-sharp beak
Caw in fright and protest
Call together all your kin
Cawing loudly, swarming
You can win!
But night will fall again.
